My final make of 2025 was another Sheep Camp sweater. I really love knitting this and I love the fit of it. I used Spincycle in House Blend and was surprised by the color change and absolutely love it. Patagonia by Juniper Moon Farm for the main color in Sand. Jennifer Berg designed the pattern.

My first finished object of 2026! A woman in our knitting group is having a baby and I made this for the baby. It was so much fun and took way more yarn that I thought it would, but I can't wait to make more animals. I bought the Animal Friends of Pica Pau book and this is the first animal I made from it. Can't wait to make more, maybe even another George as I miss him a bit. Photo credit G.

We got our baseball viewing stat round up from MLB for the past season and I clicked through to the page that is customized with even more information than they put into the email. Wow, I watched a lot of baseball. I say I because while G does watch with me, I watch more than he does. I find baseball to be the perfect thing to have on while I'm doing other things, it's a slow game, so you can look up and see the important parts when you need to. Even though I realize as the season is going on that I'm watching a lot of baseball games, it isn't until I see numbers like this that I realize how much. We're in the top 7% of viewers of MLB overall and in the top 1% of Brewers watchers, kinda wild. Of note: this doesn't include any of the games we listen to while on road trips.

FO Friday: Montage Shawl

It's Friday and I've got photos so here we are posting a finished object on the right day. I finished this last month but I've been very far behind on taking photos of things and then posting here. I talked about this one in a current wips post, with lots of details, but suffice it to say I really enjoyed knitting this one. I wore it last night to knit night and several people asked about the pattern which is always a good sign. I used Swanky Sock from Magpie Fibers in the colors Juniper Rising and Rise if you Want To. The yarn and the pattern went together so well and after a good block things relaxed and it's incredibly soft, perfect to wear around the neck. I ended up with a 60" wingspan, so a really perfect width for winding around my neck. The pattern is by Jen Schuetz.

Current WIPS

I've realized that as much as I like the alliteration of WIP Wednesday and FO Friday, it's holding me back from posting. I'd rather post whenever than try and post on the exact right day so here we are, posting about WIPS (works in progress) on a Thursday. I've got three things on the go right now; a pair of pants I'm sewing, a sweater I'm almost done with, and a shawl I recently started.

The pants are the Chanterelle Pants by Sew Liberated and I'm using the zipper expansion pack. These have taken me a while as I heavily modified them to suit what I was after, which was a comfy pair of pants with a nice front and an elastic back. I didn't want barrel legs, so I used the blog post to modify that and take out the bottom leg pleats. I also lengthened them and modified the zipper fly construction to how I prefer to sew it. I have the waistband left and then hemming. These are a lighter weight denim (6 oz) so will be great for shoulder season, but if I end up liking the fit and wearing these a lot, I could see myself making another pair with a heavier fabric. Given how much work I've put into them, it'd be a shame to not use the pattern again so I'm really hoping that I like wearing them.

The sweater is the April Cardigan by Petite Knit, my second time making this pattern. I love the fit of the shoulders of this cardigan and my other one gets a lot of wear all winter long so I knew I needed a second. For the first time I'm holding a fluffy yarn, a suri alpaca and silk, with a merino wool and I enjoy the marling effect that's had on the color. Unfortunately I ran out of the fluffy yarn so I'm waiting on more of that to come in to finish this up, I only have the button band to go.

Finally, since I'm waiting on yarn to finish the cardigan, I started on the Montage Shawl by Jen Schuetz. Jen isn't currently selling her patterns, but I think she will be at some point on her site. She kindly gifted this to me and I'm so grateful as it's been such a fun knit. I'm using Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock which is absolutely luxurious and I love knitting with it. This pattern has been great, enough to keep me interested, but now that I've done the repeat several times, I'm starting to get the hang of it and I don't need to look at the pattern quite so much.

The first two of these will be done fairly soon, but the shawl will be slower as I enjoy the knit and take my time. Slow hobbies which keep my hands and mind busy have been so good for me these days.

I haven't made anything in crochet in quite some time, so I decided it was time to change that and have finished one project and have another on the go. This sweater, designed by Nomad Stitches, absolutely flew. Crochet can be so fast, especially something like this, open mesh and tall stitches, it took me just over a week from start to finish. I finished it last month and it was in time for some travel and I used this as the extra layer to put on in the evenings as the day cooled down. It's so great and comfortable and the pattern was super easy to read and understand with lots of photos to help.

I used Juniper Moon Farm Zooey in the colorway Red Velvet which is a 60/40 Cotton/Linen blend. I really like Zooey and would use it again. My only modification is that I knit all the ribbing. You can definitely crochet ribbing but I really dislike both the stitch and the end product so since I knit I now substitue that in for any ribbing on crochet projects.

We traveled last week, wanting to get out the heat we had already decided to go to San Francisco for a few days but added on a night on the northern California coast at the last minute and left a day early. It was so wonderful to get out the car in Crescent City and feel a cool breeze and a chill in the air.

We stayed in Ft. Bragg at a wonderful small inn and ate at a fantastic seafood restaurant. The town itself was utterly delightful and a surprise as we knew nothing about it ahead of time. The next morning we ate at a great breakfast place that was Wizard of Oz themed before heading down to San Francisco, with a stop for lunch in Bodega Bay.

What I love about traveling to cities these days is we park the car and walk or use transit to get around and I'm slowly finding out which cities make that easy and which don't. SF is towards the top in that regard with an easy to use app for figuring out transit, which we needed in order to get to the Legion of Honor museum. What a fantastic museum and it was practically empty on a Wednesday afternoon. We stayed near Little Italy, which meant eating a lot of fantastic Italian food. Overall a really great few days. Bonus: the weather was cool and perfect. This final photo was as we were heading out of town, once last touristy look at the bridge.

FO Friday: Stella Quilt Cushion

I've been finishing things over the past month but I've been terrible about taking photos and getting them up on this site. I decided to try and make something other than a garment or accessory this summer and I succeeded! This is the Stella Quilt Cushion by Laura Penrose. We bought a new couch last fall and I absolutely hate the throw pillows that came with it, so I wanted to replace them. I also wanted something where I wouldn't have as much fabric on my lap during the heat of summer and this fit the bill for that. The one caveat with it is it's a large pillow, not bad, but I guess I didn't really think about what 20 inches square size actually was before diving in. I used Sandnes Garn Double Sunday in the colors Putty and Red. I'm already thinking about making another one with different colors and possible tweaking my gauge a bit to get a smaller size cushion as I've seen a few other folks do on Ravelry.

Crochet! It's been a long time since I've crocheted anything other than a stuffie and I was starting to miss it, so I went into my faves on Ravelry and decided on this pattern which is really cool. It looks quite a bit like brioche in knitting, but it's all done with slip stitching in crochet. This shawl is a slow make so I've abandoned my normal routine of only one yarn project at a time to give me some variety. Now that I've gotten the hang of the stitch, I'm enjoying it. The pattern is the Fiamma Brioche Shawl by Nomad Stitches. I'm using Madeline Tosh Merino Light in colorway Dr Zhivago's Sky, bought at my local yarn store.

We spent most of last week in Seattle, getting away from the intense sun and heat of where we live to be by the water and cooler breezes. We ventured out of downtown quite a bit this time around and enjoined Alki Beach (pictured here) as well as Fremont. Of course we saw a baseball game and we did the market, but I'm not sure we'd go to Seattle in peak season again, so crowded and I think fall, with still decent weather but not as many people may be a better time to go. It was good to get away and feel those cool breezes and be away from the utterly brutal sun and heat of Southern Oregon this time of year.

FO Friday: Palisade Pants

I'm back with another finished object, which has been done since mid June, but I hadn't gotten any photos done until this week. I sewed these up during a week where my anxiety levels were high because I was traveling by plane at the end of it and I hate flying. This project was the absolute perfect distraction since it's a good blend of a bit of trickiness and some easy sewing. These are the Palisades Pants by Papercut Patterns.

I really love this pattern, they are so comfortable and the show stopper is the pockets on the sides that are actually double pockets with front and back pocket bags on each side. The have a flat front with a faux fly and elastic across the side and back. These are the third pair I've made because I wore out one pair, love wearing my other pair, so of course I needed to make them again. I used a Japanese linen and a neutral color so that they go with everything. I cut a straight size 3 and my only modifications are to do a low seat adjustment and for this pair I lengthened the back elastic a touch to make it easier to get them on over my hips. I did choose my size based on my hips and not my waist since the elastic length can easily modify the waist measurement.

My one word of warning with these pants is that those cool pockets means you end up with a lot of fabric for all the pocket bags, so I don't think I'd go heavier than what I used this time around which is probably around 7oz weight. I may, may, make another pair with a lighter, drapier fabric because I think they'd be fabulous.

I'm standing in the midst of the giants, it's quiet and the only sounds are our footsteps and camera shutters. Amazingly no other people are around, we somehow timed our stop just right. I can hear the occasional sound of a car going by on 199, the wind is blowing through the trees a bit, and a bird loudly calls every once in a while. It's cool in the shade of the trees, sunlight filters through, so much cooler than at home, which is why we made the day trip. The trees are majestic, every time I see them I can't quite believe how large they are or how long they've been standing there. We slowly walk through, taking photos and enjoying the quiet. I'm grateful, grateful this place is within a few hours drive and that we got to be there mostly alone with the old giants.

I finished the Lusk Tee earlier this week and while it's a bit too warm to wear it right now, it's going to be a great transitional piece for me. I knit it in a cotton/linen blend (with a bit of viscose) and the gauge is quite loose so it feels light weight and as it's worn it should relax and stretch a bit, since that's what's happened with this yarn before. I used up yarn leftover from a previous project and bought the green to be able to complete this. I'm still trying to figure out if I really like drop shoulder sweaters, the fit is different and I'm not sure I love it. I don't love knitting them, it's a lot more work at the beginning and I think I'll be doing raglans for a bit as they're easier to knit, fit me better, and I enjoy knitting the project more.

It's summer and I've slowed down on the knitting but am still working away on some things. I've finished some socks and a shawl and now I'm back to my love, garment knitting. This is the body of the Lusk Tee by Rebecca Clow. It's a drop shoulder, loose gauge tee, the sister of her Tolsta pattern which I knit last year. I used the leftover from my Tolsta to knit this, getting another color in order make a striped Lusk.

After getting over the fiddly parts of this one and into the body, it's gone quite quickly. I'll be knitting 3/4 sleeves on this, since I don't wear summer knits, it'll be more of a shoulder season piece for me and something to layer over tank tops in colder AC environments. The yarn is Line by Sandnes Garn, which I also love, the mix of linen and cotton with a touch of viscose makes it drapey, especially at this gauge.

It's summer and the weather has heated up in southern Oregon. Summer, as far as my knitting goes, means I knit a lot of smaller items, like these socks. I've knit a lot of socks over the years and finally really understand what fits my foot so I convert most patterns to work with my preferred construction and sizing. These are the Comfort Core Socks by Summer Lee. I modified them to be toe up rather than cuff down and knit a fleegle heel, my favorite heel construction. I was intrigued by this pattern because I wasn't sure if I would like the texture that's meant to mimic an athletic sock but I wanted to try it. I love it. The band around the instep is so great and I'll defintely make this pattern again, possibly subbing in a different texture before and after the arch support band. The yarn is by Pigment and Ply in colorway La Primavera which I picked up at Shop La Mercerie last January.

A photo that's a nod to Me Made May. I haven't posted anything about it this year, but I've been wearing my makes and I've been proud of how much of what I've made recently, especially when sewing, have instantly become things I love to wear. Here I am in two makes from this winter, Pietra Shorts and a Bedrock Tee. I made both of these things in the past few months and am excited that we've had weather warm enough to wear them.

FO Friday: Penny Gloves

I finished these fingerless mitts up the end of last month, and while I do like wearing these types of gloves, the motivation behind this project was to try out using a fluffy yarn. Many knitters like to hold a mohair or an alpaca silk lace weight yarn with a traditional merino yarn and I'd never done that before this project. This project was to see if I like it as a test before doing an entire sweater and I'll be honest, I'm not sure. I made the Penny Gloves by PetiteKnit because I had enough leftover from my Dala Sweater that I could pair with a fluffy yarn and see what I think of the combination. I used Fyberspates Cumulus and I love how soft it is. The gloves themselves are great. If I make them again I'd shorten them a touch, but otherwise they're great. As for the decision about this yarn combination, we'll see.

Knitting has slowed around here, last week our daily highs were up near 80 and when that's the case I feel a lot less motivated to knit. This week it's cooled back off and feels like spring again and I'm thankful for that and I've been spending a bit more time with the only thing I have on the needles, the Rook Shawl. I've been enjoying how easy the stitch pattern is and I'm on the decreases, so over half way done. I also really like mosaic knitting, such a great way to play with color. I'm using the leftover Ritual Dyes Marona from my Lauder Cardigan and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in the colorway Leith. This is a really hard project to photograph and get the details, I did my best, but it's way better in person, with the variation in the Spincycle being so subtle, I can't get the camera to pick that up.

FO Friday: DRK Everyday Sweater

I'm behind on my finished objects but that's because I've started knitting smaller accessories as the temperature has risen here and finished things more quickly. Also, getting photos taken always takes me a while and I finally just did it. But, to the sweater, it's a DRK Everyday Sweater by Andrea Mowry. I've made this once before and love my version, but the fit needed a few modifications for my body. I'm finding that this designer expects people with my bust size to have narrower shoulders, so for this sweater I didn't start with the collar but started below that and with fewer stitches. I knit one extra set of short rows and knit the yoke longer than recommended in the pattern. I went back and did the collar last, so that the weight of the sweater and the sleeves were done and the collar would sit as expected. I knit the collar with one smaller needle size than recommended and 1/2" longer. The fit is so much better! The yarn is Sandes Garn Duo, I used up leftovers from my Weekender Crew for the stripes. My only niggle is how the increases look in the solid yarn, but I know I'll still wear it a ton because it's so comfortable. A sweater that feels like a sweatershirt is my style.

FO Friday: Lauder Cardigan

Another finished object! I have to say right off the bat that I'm very unsure of this sweater and maybe that shows in the picture? It has nothing to do with the pattern or the yarn, both are great, but I don't know that I love the construction and in turn the fit of it. This is a drop shoulder sweater with an all over cable pattern and I knit it in a DK weight yarn. The Lauder is a mega pattern from Rebecca Clow that gives you a lot of options: round neck or v-neck pullover, the same two neckline options in a cardigan, and the same neck options in a vest. It's a huge PDF and was, to be honest, a bit hard to decipher at times to ensure I was following the right directions for the version I was making. I knit it in Ritual Dyes Marona which I got when we popped up to Portland for a last minute trip last fall. I love the yarn and would use it again.

My hesitations completely come from the way the sweater fits me across the shoulders and how it feels when I'm wearing it. I've never made a drop shoulder cardigan before and I'm not sure I'd do it again, as it feels a bit like it could fall off and I don't love that. This is also my first ever all over cable sweater and it is heavy and warm, which as I discussed previously, may not be great for me. We'll see how much I pull it off the shelf next winter.

A few weeks ago I posted a picture of a work in progress and here is the finished product! I absolutely love this backpack. Noodlehead makes such great bag patterns and the instructions are so well done. I also really appreciate the sew-a-longs on YouTube, I've learned so much about how to do some small details that make a great bag. I used this almost immediately to walk into town for knit night at my local shop and it was perfect. Then I used it again last weekend to go to a local festival and parade and it was perfect for that as well. I made it for travel to be able to stash all the things while we spend a day exploring a city and I know it'll be prefect for that. The pattern comes with a tote version as well and I can't wait to make it.

Side note: I'm wearing Free Range Slacks and a Bedrock Tee in this picture with the backpack.

It's another WIP Wednesday! I'm currently working on a DRK Everyday Sweater, a pattern I've made before and really like, so I wanted to make another. I had some yarn left from my Weekender Crew, so decided to order the same type of yarn and do some stripes. I love the Sandnes Garn Duo, it's like wearing a sweatshirt. I've made some modifications, the largest is I'm going to pick up and knit the collar at the end since I wanted to tighten up the neckline from the pattern. After knitting a cabled sweater, I'm loving the meditative nature of stockinette and have enjoyed how much I don't have to think while knitting.

I love a good bag, G will confirm that. When I started sewing, it meant I could customize and make the exact bag I wanted and I've done that for project bags for knitting and small totes and for use as purses. This is a free pattern from Core Fabrics (as long as you sign up for their email). I've made both sizes now, having made the large version last year and this small version last weekend. It doesn't take a lot of fabric, which is great. I used denim left from a jeans project and some quilting cotton I had in the fabric bin. It took an afternoon to sew it all together and I'm really happy with the monotone vibe of the webbing and zipper with the denim. My only modification was to use 1" webbing rather than 1.5", for the smaller size 1.5" felt too wide to me. Side note: Noodle Head is a great resource for bag hardware, I like it better than Wawak, Anna stocks really nice zippers and hardware and lots of different webbing colors.

It's harder to do a WIP Wednesday with a sewing project, but this pile of cut fabric is my WIP this week. Cutting is the part of the process of sewing that I dislike the most so to have all the various pieces cut out for the exterior, the lining, and the interfacing feels good. This is the beginnings of the Buckthorn Backpack. It'll be a slow sew as it's a larger bag therefore a bit more complicated. I'm excited for the finished product which will hopefully travel around with me and walk through many cities as we explore in the future.

Inspired by Jen I'm going to try and talk more about my projects in process. This is especially fitting as I've been working on things for longer this year and taking my time, process over product. This is the Lauder Cardigan which I've been working on for about 6 weeks and all I've got left are the sleeves. This is my first all over cable cardigan and while I'm excited to have it and wear it, I'm not sure knitting cables, especially this many cables, is my favorite thing. Maybe once it's done and I'm wearing it I'll decide it was worth it.

We got home over the weekend from a road trip to Arizona to watch spring training baseball. While I knew in my mind that it would be a lot of driving, actually doing all the driving was so much time in the car. The big difference with this trip from other road trips we've taken over the past couple of years is that we drove so much while in Phoenix. We usually drive to a large city, park the car, and then don't use it much at all while there opting to walk or use public transit. In Phoenix we drove a lot and it was always a half hour or more on massive freeways to get to the games. I enjoyed the baseball, as I always do, but I'll say that Phoenix is not for me. I'm also not sure that I'd ever do spring training again. Photo taken by G as I drove, on I-10 heading east to Phoenix. G wrote up a longer post with baseball pictures if you're interested in reading about our experiences at games.

I finished this sweater a while ago, but finally got a good photo of it and G was able to practice taking portraits as we went to a few locations around town. I'm Swedish by heritage and it was fun to make a sweater with the Dala Horses on it since I've had at least one figurine of them on a shelf in every house I've lived in. This was my first time using this yarn and I really like it. I searched for a while to find the specific colors and am so glad I did as this combination works so well.

I finished both of these in 2024 but didn't get a picture until today. I love both of these pieces and am so pleased with them. I spent a lot of time before making each doing some small things to make sure the fit would be good. The Stick Season sweater is a drop shoulder design, but has a bit of a sleeve cap at the beginning of the sleeves so you don't have to have a lot of positive ease in order to get a good fit. It's a great fitting sweater, so comfortable, and easy to wear with a lot of little nice design details. It's the third time I've made the Morgan Jeans and I've fully perfected the fit of these, I love this pair so much. Modifications are for a gaping back, low seat, and I swapped in a zipper instead of the button fly. I used a 10 oz denim and that's my preferred weight, still gives them some good structure, but not too thick for my machine. (Photo credit G.)

Finally posting this make, which has quickly become a favorite and I'm wearing it all the time. I finished this in October, just before we left on our anniversary trip and it was the perfect sweater for the weather we encountered in Monterey. I love cotton wool blend yarns, they are the perfect weight and work so well for shoulder season weather which I experience a lot of where I live. This is an easy sweater to throw on over anything and the color means it goes with everything.

I had a rough month last month where sewing was concerned and wasn't feeling great about things when the month ended. I decided to spend October doing simple projects that I've either sewn before or that were similar to things I've sewn. Feeling deflated meant that I was questioning my abilities and this month I want to feel good about things, so going back to basics felt like a good idea. It's working so far. In a couple of days I finished a new large size project bag for sweater or larger blanket projects and I'm so pleased with it.

Next up I'm going to be making a Scout Tee and a Square Neck Top from some stash fabric and I'm excited to be able to complete some things quickly in an afternoon. It feels good to go back to basics and also make a few simple things that I know I'll be able to wear and use right away.

Pietra shorts

These shorts have been a journey to get to. This is the fourth time I've attempted them and the second time I've finished them. One of the first things I sewed was a pair of these shorts, as part of learning to sew with the course I took online. As is normal when learning something, my first attempts weren't great and the shorts I made were too big. It took me making more pants to realize it.

When I decided to make more, I had a hard time figuring out what size to cut and got frustrated and after cutting the wrong size, stopped. I gave myself a year away from the pattern and decided to make a muslin to see if I could get a fit and that patience and work paid off, I found my fit. These are a size 8 with the side seams let out (love large seam allowances, it makes all the difference when fitting pants), a low seat adjustment, one inch off the rise, and I lengthened the elastic a touch to get it over my hips. I really loved working with this cotton, so crisp and clean looking.

A detail of the interior facing on the Pietras, love the bees!

I took my time with these shorts, using quilting cotton for the interior front waist facing and did a bias binding in order to make it softer against the skin. I'm so glad I did that. I'm not great at bias bound seams as the stitching in the detail image shows, but it was good practice somwhere no one else will see it regularly but me. Now I can't wait to wear them out and about, these photos were taken while sewing and immediately after finishing.

I finished this top a few weeks ago and still have yet to wear it out and about because it's been way too hot. That being said, I do really like it and I really enjoyed knitting it. A lot of people find the knit to be slow and a bit tedious, but I love that part of knitting. It's meditative and relaxes me more than most other things. I knit this with a linen, cotton, viscose blend and I absolutely love it for a summer yarn, it has a lot of drape and it's really affordable. Photo credit: G

I've been trying to find the perfect t-shirt dress pattern for a while and finally realized that what I really needed to do was hack together two different patterns to get what I want. I talked last fall about the Bedrock Tee and how much I'm loving it. Since that post I've been playing around a bit to get a better fit so I love it even more. Then I realized I could hack it together with the Rio Dress and get the t-shirt dress of my dreams. Reader, it worked! This is a great t-shirt dress, loose enough to be cool in hot weather and the neckline is the scoop neck I prefer. I also love this fabric, a bit of a retro vibe print that reminds me of my childhood, purchased at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics in April when we were in the Bay Area. Photo credit: G, the best photog I know.

It's going to be hot here the end of the week, starting tomorrow we're supposed to be above 90℉ with Saturday possibly being above 105℉. That's hot. To prepare I've been making sun tea as I'll be switching from hot tea to iced in the mornings. I love how easy this is and how the colored lids I got for the Mason Jars pop with color. From left to right the teas are Lemonberry Black, Yunnan, and Hibiscus Lemon.

I started sewing after we moved to a rural area where I don't have access to a fabric store that carries a wide range of fabrics suitable for garments. So, when G and I get to big cities we always look to see if there are stores there that we would like to visit. Last weekend I got to go fabric shopping! G took photos to occupy himself while I was browsing and caught me here, trying to decide what to buy. Such a treat to feel the fabrics and see the colors in person. I ended up getting fabric for a few different projects and now it's time to get sewing.

These are my last finished objects of 2023, since I won't finish what's currently on my needles by the end of the year and I have no plans to sew anything before January. I absolutely love both of these pieces, they fit so well and I've already been wearing the jeans a lot. The Sheep Camp used up leftovers from my Shiftigan, which is something that's been a goal of mine this year, to use up what I have.

For the Morgans I made some more pattern adjustments based on the fit of my first pair since 100% cotton fabric stretches so much as you wear it. In addition to the low seat adjustment I did for the last pair, I did a gaping back adjustment. I took out 1" on the top of the waistband to curve it in even more and I took out 1/8" on the top of each back yoke piece. This worked really well and I think I've nailed the fit for future pairs. This is one of the things I love about sewing, I'm always able to adjust and tweak and make patterns better when I made them for a second or even third time.

My latest sweater make! I joined the Joji Locatelli Fall Knit-a-long this year with two entries and this is the first completed object for the KAL. If you like a comfortable drop shoulder sweater that is knit top down, this is a great pattern option. It's honestly like wearing a sweatshirt, and it has pockets! Joji has several patterns created in the same construction, so there are options if you like this type of sweater. I used a yarn made with a lot of recycled fibers and it's also a really affordable, light weight, shoulder season yarn which I've used before and really like. If you knit a lot you can't always afford the luxurious yarns and I'm so glad that my local yarn shop carries a wide variety of price points. (Photo credit G, as always.)

I finished this sweater recently and it involved a couple of firsts for me in knitting, my first all over colorwork sweater and my first steek. If you aren't a knitter, a steek is when you knit the sweater in the round, like a pullover really, and then cut up the center front to create a cardigan. This, to be sure, was a bit of a nerve racking process but I got a lot of support from my local yarn shop folks. I'm so grateful to have that shop and the people there to cheer me on and help me find the best yarns.

My only modifications to the pattern were to make it a touch shorter in the body and to shorten the sleeves to 3/4 length which I prefer for heavier wool sweaters becuase otherwise I get too hot. If you'd like even more details, I took extensive notes on my Ravelry project page and there are pictures that show the entire process (note: you must have a Ravelry account to see this page).

And yes, I'm wearing this sweater on an 85 degree day to get this photo because I'm so excited it's done! Thanks to G, as always, for taking such great photos and getting me to look natural.

Haralson Belt Bag

I'm a bag person. I don't care about shoes or jewelry or having a lot of high fashion clothes, but I love having the right bag for the right situation. Sewing has opened up the door to being able to make bags that are customized and perfect for what I need. My most recent make is the Haralson Belt Bag and I love it. It's the perfect size to fit the phone, the wallet, a few other things, and, most importantly, my reading glasses that I need to have with me all the time now. I also think it'll be great for travel to be able to have the necessities easily accessible but my hands free.

This was a fairly easy sew, the most work came from cutting all the pieces and then getting the interfacing on all of them. Once I started sewing I finished in an afternoon. I'm not great with zippers yet, but definitely did the best job I've done yet with the two in this pattern. And I love that there is a sew-a-long on YouTube to help out; there are a few parts that are easier to understand when you see them and I was grateful for the extra help.

Jeans! Jeans! Jeans! Can you believe it? I have to say that at times I didn't know if I would finish these, but I did and I'm so excited about it. When I learned how to sew two years ago I was most interested in making clothes that would fit me well and, on top of that, clothes I would be proud to wear. With these jeans I've accomplished both of those things. Are they perfect? Absolutely not, but they fit better than a ready to wear pair I would buy at a shop. Even better? I know what to tweak for the next pair to make them fit me even better. This has been a long process for me, I started the first muslin in January, then made a second muslin and then finally cut the denim and basted it together to double check fit one more time. I worked slowly, especially since I had to change thread so much in between the seams and top stitching, but I learned a lot and am excited to make another pair later this year.

Pattern: Morgan Jeans by Closet Core Patterns and I used the Sew Your Dream Jeans Course to help me along and that course is worth every single penny, such a confidence booster.
Fabric: 10oz Cotton Indigo Denim from Stonemountain & Daughters Fabrics along with copper top stitching thread. They are my favorite fabric shop to order from online, super helpful when I've emailed with questions.
Modifications: I cut a straight 10 and did a low seat adjustment along with letting out both the inseam and the side seams by 1/8".

I'm wearing my Cande Pullover made out of Purl Soho Santolina yarn in coloway Green Valley with the jeans in this photo.

First finished make of 2023! Truth is that I did everything but the buttons and button holes prior to the calendar year roll over, but I finished it just after the first. These are based on the Greer Jumpsuit, but in a first for me, I did heavy modifications on making this for the first time. I made the straps a fixed length and used buttons so they are more like overalls, rather than the ties in the pattern. I also sized down two sizes from what was recommended, I didn't want them to be too big. I lengthened the legs to make them full length along with tapering them in quite a bit so they aren't wide legs. They fit well and they're really comfortable.

Now I'll see if I'm an overall person or not. I haven't had a pair in a very long time, it's so much work to go to the bathroom, but the comfort of not having a waist band may win me over. I do think these will be great for traveling, super comfy either in long car trips or on a plane.

It's hot today, going to be near 100 today and tomorrow, so I checked on my blueberry bushes and got my first harvest from these bushes ever! I planted very small starts that I ordered online 3 years ago and knew it would take some time to get fruit, but last year there were blossoms and the beginnings of berries and then... heat dome. 115 degrees faranheit did them in and they all shriveled up. But this year I've been attentive. There were a lot of blossosm, I saw the birds eyeing them so I got netting and put it up over them to protect the berries. Today I harvested. Can't wait for my oatmeal tomorrow morning with some of these beauties.

Last month I traveled to see family and it was the first time I'd done so since the pandemic began. It was a lovely weekend with my sister, brother-in-law, and my mom. As part of it my sister and I went through several boxes of old photos my mom had and I brought home a handful of them. It's always funny to look through the snaps of your childhood, things my mom felt it important to document. There were a lot of photos from our favorite lake vacation spot that we went to every summer. A lot of older photos of my mom and her twin, and many sets of photos of birthdays, Christmases and the like. This is a snap my mom probably took without thinking much of it when I was five. I'm in my favorite swimsuit from childhood, you can't see the Snoopy patch on my chest, after doing one of my favorite things, swimming, and with a dog, some of my best friends growing up were our dogs.

I've been steadily sewing and knitting this year so far and in January I made a cardigan and a pair of linen pants. I think this may be the fastest I've ever made a sweater, to be honest, but it went so quickly. The pants are the Free Range Slacks and it was my first time working with 100% linen, but I think it worked out OK. I did make some adjustments, took an inch off the rise and added 1.5 inches to the length of the legs. These will be great for spring and work well if I roll up the cuffs. (Bonus? I made the socks last year and yes, the feet are a bit out of focus in this shot, but we did the best we could with a decent background and lighting for this one, my photographer is the best sport.)

Every morning between December 25 and December 29 I woke to fresh snow. By far the day with the most snowfall was December 26, it snowed all day, and on December 27 I shoveled sidewalks for those out walking and enjoying it. This isn't usual for where I live. We can see snow on the foothills and the mountains, but we don't have it at our house very often. It was gorgeous. The sun came out on the 27th and I went walking in the old Sorel boots I've had since I lived in Minnesota.

A few snaps from my walk, first the creek near my house and then the hills to the north.

In late 2020 I signed up for my very first yarn subscription, Sock Squad from The Farmer's Daughter Fibers and a few days into this year I received my first skeins of yarn. Each month thereafter I received yarn and each month I made a pair of socks. Many of the patterns came from 52 Weeks of Socks but not all. I've never done anything like this and it was such a great learning experience for me. I found out a lot about how I prefer to approach knitting projects and what types of socks fit me best. That being said, I doubt I'll be making any socks in 2021.

Lately, be it on my daily walks or as I move around the house, I've been trying hard to notice the small things. The other day as I was opening the house up for the day, putting down shades to let the sun in and turning up the heat, I saw the moon. It was a quick glimpse and then I processed how cool it was to see it through one of our higher windows in our dining room. I look up a lot these days and watched Venus rise this past week above the hills to the SSW. Each time I notice things like this I'm grateful to live with an amateur astronomer.

I love this mountain lake. I love going at the end of summer, when it's quiet and peaceful because people are working and in school. I love sitting on the red adirondack chairs and watching the birds, the few people on the lake or around me, and listening to the wind in the pines. Yesterday I did all of that and it was so very good.

This is Larry & Louise. They are two sagebrush lizards that live and hang out near our patio in our backyard. Larry is the one with flecks of blue in front of Louise. Last summer during the never ending lock down we noticed a lizard basking on the top rocks of a small retaining wall next to our patio. It just hung out there and wasn't even too scared of us if we moved the grill or used the hose which were right next to the rocks. We named the first one Larry not knowing at all if it was male, but we like alliteration. Then there were two, we called them the Larrys, why not? This spring the lizards are back and upon researching further and watching them through a spotting scope (good thing an amateur astronomer lives here), we realized that it's a male and female and the male has been working very hard to woo the female. We aren't sure if there will be tiny lizards or not, but we'll see. For now we check up on them and watch them chase each other and we hope Larry gets his girl.

I've been learning how to sew over the past few months and at times it's felt tedious and difficult. I've spent a lot of time practicing with my machine on scraps of fabric, stitching straight, how to make various seams, and finally I made some napkins to have made an actual usable thing. This week I finished my first pair of pants. They're simple, an elastic waist band with side seam pockets. But I made a muslin to practice the pattern and ended up doing a lot of adjustments to customize the pattern to fit me. Guess what? THEY FIT!

I love gardening, but this year with staying at home so much, the back yard has become a refuge. We've had a rocky spring with some cold snaps and cold nights. I lost some plants, but luckily found some starts at the local nursery. It's now hot, sunny, all the things tomato plants, sunflowers, beans, and cukes love. Seeing the first tomatoes ripen is the most exciting part of growing.

That doesn't mean life is perfect, far from it, but it does mean that I feel like my foundation is setting me up to deal with the crap a whole lot better than I have in the past.

Three times a week I run the same route out and back on a greenway. Many people would probably get bored, but I find something comforting in seeing the same hills, same creeks, and same trees time after time. But they really aren't the same and that's the challenge for me, as I run, I look for the changes. And it never ceases to amaze me that I always find something. Some times is a bit of something a human has left behind, but many times it's the activity of animals. And today it was noticing this log, I'd never looked to my left when crossing the creek bridge, and there it was, a tree for a bridge across the creek.

We just got back from a trip to the Midwest to visit family. In Milwaukee we spent an afternoon at the art museum and it's quickly become one of my favorite museums in the country. The 20th Century art collection is amazing and the majority of it was collected by one woman over the course of 30 years. She gave the museum so much art they had to add on to display it all in the 1970s. It's unbelievable and it's many of my favorites: Rothko, Diebenkorn, Hoffman, and more. If you're ever there, you should definitely take time to visit. (Photo credit G, he always catches me candidly in photos while we travel.)

More from my sketchbook. I've been watching Lisa Congdon's Creative Bootcamp over on Creative Bug over the past few weeks (there are still two weeks left!) and it's been really great. I'm doing some of the activities, not necessarily all, but I enjoy watching how other artists work and talk about working. I'm already a huge fan of monochrome and so doing this landscape was really fun. I love flat, somewhat abstract landscapes and have been doing them since my college art school days, so it's been fun to revisit them.

As I've talked about other places on this site, I've been retreating a bit in the past weeks. I'm using both my journal and my sketchbook as places to help me deal with the craziness that is happening all around me and the firehose of information that is hurtling at us. So my doodles are reflecting some of what I'm trying to do and breathing deeply is one of them.

We got almost a foot of snow overnight Tuesday into Wednesday this week. I grew up with snow and I don't hate it, what I hate is living in a place where no one will deal with it: we don't have enough plows, people don't shovel, so you can't get out and about and move around easily. And this is likely to stay with us for another day or two. But I will admit, it was beautiful on Wednesday morning.

I spent much of my break either crocheting or drawing and I've started a few different drawing challenges, one that will last the whole year (more on that later). But in doing the drawings I've been inspired by some of Lisa Congdon's sketchbook spreads to do my own take on buildings, something I've never really drawn or thought about much before. As usual, I go for a more illustrative than realistic look, but it's been funny trying things in different size sketchbooks and with different mediums, this is water color brush pen with black ink for details.

Over the past few weeks I've taught myself, through online videos, how to crochet. It's been interesting, I've never had a ton of interesting in doing any type of craft with yarn, but for some reason a few weeks ago I decided I wanted to learn how to do this. I'll admit that this is a nostalgic thing for me, my Grammie crocheted and I have two afghans that she made. She's been gone since I was 18, but I still think of her often. So, I'm a hooker now, next up is a small lap blanket to use in my office when it's chilly.

It is cold here, so maybe I'm dreaming of warmer weather? I'm not sure, but I've been repeatedly drawing different variations of trees in my sketchbook. Some are evergreens, so more winter oriented, but this is obviously not that. I've gone back to watercolor brush markers and am layering, playing, and having some fun. Trees, for those that have known me a long time, are a recurring theme for me in my life. I keep coming back to them again and again, sometimes with 20 year gaps, like now. But there is something about their changing in the seasons and how many emotions they can convey that keep me drawing them. (I apologize for the crappy photo, but I'm into sharing my work more than waiting for the perfect photo these days.)

I took the last two weeks of September off work and we rented a car and drove down the Oregon coast. It was a really wonderful trip, with beautiful views, gorgeous weather, and lots of time to relax. We are lazy vacationers, with loose plans, but mostly just doing what we feel like each day and it usually turns out pretty great. This wasn't any different. This photo is looking north up the coast with Heceta Light House in the distance. New techniques and ideas are a good thing. In Pam Garrison's Creative Sketchbooking I've learned a ton and had a lot of fun with some new techniques. One is doing a no thinking watercolor background, letting it dry, and then "finding" things in the watercolor, be they flowers, animals, shapes, etc. She calls it responsive drawing. I did this one over the weekend and was excited about some new ideas for flowers.

It was a gorgeous weekend in Portland and it was also a star party weekend. We volunteered to show people the stars as part of our local astronomy club, so we made our way out to Rooster Rock State Park on Saturday.
I did a watercolor wash using watercolor markers yesterday to start my spread. Then, in bits and pieces throughout the day, I added the pattern of circles, leaves, and maybe a cacti like shape. Part way through, I decided to add in a few birds, why not?

I spent much of yesterday on my porch, it was gorgeous. I've been inspired lately by Lisa Congdon's Experiments in Blue, so went with all of my blue gel pens, some blue watercolor brush pens, and a new pen I got in my April Art Snack, which was the palest of blues but I ended up loving it.

Even though spring just started, techinically speaking, it has felt like summer all week in Portland. This has meant that I'm on my porch many afternoons, soaking up the sun. Usually with kleenex (thanks allergies), some wine, sparkling water (thanks Sodastream), the radio (gotta have All Things Considered), and a comic to read (but sometimes this may vary and it'll be my sketchbook). It is on days like this that I don't just love my city, but I remember how much I love our little house.

I spent the majority of my holiday break drawing. Some days I probably drew for 5 hours or more, working on basic shapes, geometric patterns, designs, block letters, and just having some fun getting very low tech with pens and paper. I took classes on Creative Bug, a site I discovered through a Twitter friend, from a Portland based illustrator, Lisa Congdon. It was so much FUN! I've got lots of pictures of my work on Flickr. And now, in January, I'm doing a 31 day drawing challenge and posting that work to Instagram. I know, I've joined Instagram, follow along if you want to see not great iPad photos of my drawing.

Last night we went star gazing again. I've been focusing on looking through binoculars and seeing what I can see. I looked at some old favorites, Mizar and Alcor in the Big Dipper, the Coat Hanger, Sagitta, but then decided to try to find something new. I recently got a binoculars highlights book, to help me find things I can see with just binocs, and it's been fun trying to find the things it points out. I started to look around the constellation Scorpius and found Rho Ophiuchi, a triple star. And yes, this isn't a photo, but I think this section may start including drawings too.

We headed out of the city last night to star gaze. A welcome relief to get to some cooler temperatures, especially after sitting in our car, which has broken AC, in traffic for quite a while. It was amazing to watch the temperature fall from 95F (35C) in the city to 78F (25C) at Stub Stewart. We both watched as the thermometer was dropping as we climbed up into the foothills of the coast range. Then, as the sun was setting, we saw the glorious site of the sliver crescent moon and venus over the mountains. It was beautiful.
I went for a walk today, had to get something at the library. The gloom of Portland winter has returned in full force after a week of very cold, but sunny, weather. I walk in my neighborhood a lot, so lately I've been taking the camera with me and trying to see things in a new way. This bush was pushing through a fence, a few berries are hanging on along with the drips that hadn't fallen from the steady mist coming down.

I set an alarm before I went to bed last night. We haven't used an alarm in our bedroom for several weeks now. It was fine before the holidays, we were getting up, but not so much over the past week or so. So I set one, not too early, just to rouse me a bit earlier. I went downstairs in the quiet house, turned on the Christmas tree lights, made tea, got the paper in, and then went to sit down and eat breakfast. Just as I was sitting down, I looked outside and saw this. It made it all worth it to get up, to remind me that in the winter, our sunrises can be so fantastic.

Here in Portland, our weather has been a bit crap. This week we've had a Pineapple Express come through, so a lot of rain. That all coincided with a solar eclipse, so G and I were fairly sure we wouldn't be able to see it. BUT yesterday about 3:20pm, the clouds scattered and G ran to set up his telescope to catch the last part of the eclipse (it was at peak at 3pm). It was really cool to see it up close and G snapped some photos with our point and shoot through the telescope. In addition, right now a very large sunspot is visible (an average sunspot is at least as big as the earth, so this one is extremely large). Again, looking at that, I remember that we are all pretty small—I like my perspective getting that jolt.

We were at it again last weekend. This dose of warm, clear weather, along with earlier sunsets has made for really great star gazing. Last Friday we battled the traffic for a few hours of peace and quiet at Stub Stewart. My goal this summer was to learn the night sky and the constellations using only star charts and last Friday I found the following: Pegasus (for the first time), Hercules, Draco, The Northern Cross (which include Deneb), Lyra (which includes Vega), Polarus (aka the North Star), The Dippers, and Cassiopeia. It was a good night.

I spent last week celebrating my 40th birthday with this view from my room in Cabo San Lucas. It was fantastic and I feel so lucky to have spent it with my best friend, G, who spoiled me and made it the best birthday ever.a

Today I woke to an Emergency Broadcast Alert from the city asking me to stay home due to ice. I then went outside to take this picture and almost fell on my ass. This is craziness for Portland, but I am doing as told and staying home.

I woke up to yet more snow this morning. It is quiet in the neighborhood and beautiful. It continues to fall as I type.

A rare full on snow storm in Portland. Our little garden gnome is holding fast through the wind and snow in the backyard.

I had to walk to the store today so I decided to take the camera and see my neighborhood differently. Amazing how many little, interesting things I began to notice.

A photo I took last fall while eating brekkie. The sun started coming up, I looked outside, and ran for a camera and snapped away. Amazing how sometimes, just a quick look up can show such beauty.
